End of an Era, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett headed to BK

So it's official and has been for about 5 days now, my favourite NBA player Paul Pierce has been traded to the Brooklyn Nets.  When I first heard the rumours weeks ago I felt sad.  I truly am a Boston Fan, but first and foremost my love and loyalties lie with Mr Pierce himself. So honestly I was dreading the thought of him having to go to another team.

However one of his bestest KG Kevin Garnett is going with him!  This made me feel a bit better, knowing that they have played together for years and they ebb and flow beautifully with each other.

The deal entailed the Nets receiving Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry and D.J. White, while sending Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, Kris Joseph, Keith Bogans, MarShon Brooks and receiving first round draft picks in 2014, 2016 and 2018.  All this to help rebuild the Celtics.  Boston does have an opportunity to swap the first round picks in 2017.

Now the plus side is this trade will hopefully help the Nets this year at least clinch the Eastern Conference Final and with my fingers crossed maybe even the Championship. Another positive note I reside closer to BK than Boston and I've always wanted to check out the new Barclays Center. Maybe my first game will be the Nets against the Celtics!

Paul Pierce I wish you all the best in this new Chapter and I look forward to seeing you play against the Raptors in your new Black and White!!!

Linas Kleiza and the Amnesty Clause

So many things are happening during the off season and around the trade deadlines.  Announced today, the Toronto Raptors have designated Linas Kleiza as the team's amnesty player.

The Amnesty Clause allows teams to eliminate bad players contracts under certain conditions. Kleiza may still receive his paychecks, while his salary will still count against the teams salary cap but the team won't need to pay luxury taxes on the waived salary.

My guess is Kleiza is currently in Lithuania living the life during the off season so I guess we won't be meeting any time soon and the date I always envisioned isn't going to happen. So Rudy Gay, you have any spare time for a date with this lovely lady??

UNITY Festival (Toronto)

Tomorrow, Thursday July 18th, marks the kickoff for the UNITY Festival occurring until July 21st in Toronto. UNITY Charity began when founder Michael Prosserman aka “Bboy Piecez” found his passion for break dancing at a young age and decided to share his form positive self-expression with other young people undergoing all kinds of challenges, much like his own personal experience of dealing with a schizophrenic mother.
UNITY Charity engages and empowers youth to be role models and leaders in their communities. UNITY engages youth 10 to 18 by implementing school and community programs helping youth positively express their stress and develop skills for success. UNITY empowers youth to make better choices as leaders, mentors and positive community role models leading to more productive citizens, safer schools, and healthier communities.
If you want to get involved or just enjoy the festival, there are a number of events happening all week. The Weeknd Covers Complex, Belong to the World (video)

Torontonian minstrel, Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd graces the cover of Complex in an image as eerily beautiful as his music, for the August/September issue. He speaks in depth about working with fellow Canadian Drake, his appreciation for RnB legend R. Kelly and trip-hop founders Portishead (as if those influences weren't obvious), and that his air of mystery was a fluke of being camera shy. He also describes his debut album Kiss Land, set to release August 27th "represents the thrill—and the horror—of tasting and savoring stardom."

Tributes to Trayvon Martin after Zimmerman Verdict

Saturday July 13th, the man responsible for killing Floridian-teen Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman was found not guilty, a verdict that has instilled doubt in the American judicial system among my peers, colleagues and friends. For the past 48 hours social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have been aflutter as people express their opinion, show off their shiny new law "degrees," and of course the world of hip hop has jumped at the chance to be one of many "Tributes" for the 17-year old's injustice.

Do I agree with the verdict? In a nutshell, fuck no. At the same time, however, I often find these "tributes" a form of exploitation, but perhaps I'm incredibly jaded.

Grammy-nomiated singer, Raheem DeVaughn got in the studio with Styles P to "dedicate" some thoughts to Zimmerman with their tribute, “Trigga Man.”

Wyclef Jean loves a good tribute, he took to YouTube to put out his feelings on the verdict with “Justice (If You’re 17),"

Even Young Jeezy released a new track “It’s A Cold World,“ in honour of Trayvon Martin and the injustice many feel he was served.

Jeezy does address my unspoken jaded thoughts, however, "I am in no way shape, form, or fashion am trying to capitalize off of the latest series of events. These are my true feelings and my form of expression about it."

New Orleans rapper 3D Na’Tee recorded “Dear Mr. Zimmerman,” and took to her site to write about her feelings about the case and its conclusion.

Not every rapper grabbed a mic to express themselves, underground hip hop artist and Slam poet Guante took to his blog, not to write to Zimmerman or Trayvon, but instead with an open letter to white people encouraging us to get involved.

The Office Turntable

I might be a little late on this, but thanks to the homie DJ Wristpect I just discovered the Cannes Lion Awards-winning Office Turntable. As having worked for one of the most successful online music mags of its genre, I can tell you first-hand that they get hundreds to thousands of music submissions daily; be it through email promos, social media spam, or the old fashioned demo-cassette CD. It's impossible to listen to it all, and most things get thrown out, or over-looked (cue the violent whines of Tyler the Creator), so if you aren't already a name, and you don't know somebody who knows somebody, it can be really difficult to get your turn. You need to stand out.

Kontor Records, one of the most successful distributors of dance music, did just that to German house music producer Boris Dlugosch by teaming up with PR agency Ogilvy Deutschland; they created one of the sickest promo gimmicks I've ever seen. I'm not sure how anyone wouldn't take the time out to listen, and let's be honest, the creativity automatically gives you points in the "thumbs up" category. See for yourself, check the video below,

J. Cole’s Born Sinner #1 On Billboard

As I sit here, listening to my 175th full rotation of Young Grown Simba's Born Sinner, I'm not all that surprised that the North Carolina-native has reach #1 on the American Billboard Charts; But I am proud! Cole has been one of those artists for the past four years for me that I have been unable to skip, turn off or turn down, and instead consistently push, promote and turn the fuck up! He's got something for everyone and after selling close to 300k in its first week, the only real surprise is that it took 3 weeks to hit Number 1.
3 weeks later. #1 Album in the country. Born Sinner. Thank You / Follow your Heart. You won't fail. -J. Cole
If you haven't picked up your own copy of J. Cole's second full-length studio album to reach #1, do yourself a favour and grab the Deluxe version.

Toronto, the Next Atlantis? TO Flood 2013

First Union Station is flooded almost exactly one year ago (June 1st, 2012) with up to 2 feet of water filling it's platforms, then Calgary is devastated by excessive rain fall and flooding, June 20th and again July 5th, and now a mere four days later Mother Nature strikes at Toronto. In one day our city received more rainfall than we experience in a whole month, which caused city-wide blackouts that reached as far west as Oakville, and extreme flooding of our streets, highways and train tracks, and of course, Union Station. Some neighbourhoods were without power for a full 12 hours, and many people had to abandon their vehicles on the road... makes you think twice about reconsidering that canoe purchase, huh?

With all this climactic excitement, I regret that I only escaped the warmth and comfort of my home to trek to the gym, instead of going on a Magellanean-adventure to survey to lower streets, a mere block away.

But fortunately, Twitter has an extensive following that keep the flow of #StormTo photos (no pun intended) consistent.

Now that just breaks my heart! Poor Ferrari, everyone knows that horses can't swim, what was this driver thinking?!?

Canoe rack sales will be skyrocketing after this, just watch! As for the aftermath, the city looked eerily peaceful;

Shout outs to Ms. Heather Elle for taking that one during her morning run.

Jay-Z - Dead Presidents 3

It's only fitting that today be a Jay-Z kind of day, the Roc Nation King is releasing his twelfth full-length studio album, Magna Carta Holy Grail tomorrow July 10th; and Hov hosted a live Twitter Q&A for what seemed like 5+ hours which had me questioning whether or not his account was hacked. Turns out the Jigga Man was just in a giving mood, as he gave producer Young Guru (and Just Blaze) his "Twitter blessings" to unlock the full version of "Dead Presidents 3."

For those that were hyped to hear to full track after that snippet was realized eons ago, peep the SoundCloud audio below.
