This Thursday April 26th is a momentous day for basketball, not only is it the last game of the Lakers and the Raptors regular season before playoffs, it's also the last game the New Jersey Nets... ever! After 35 seasons in New Jersey the Nets will finally be moving to Barclay's Center in Brooklyn after it was announced in 2004 as part of a real estate deal; part-owner and Brooklyn native Jay-Z must be ecstatic his team is coming "home." I wonder if this will help establish as loyal a fan base for The Nets as the Knicks possess...
The Nets face off at the ACC this Thursday against the Raptors, and yes I will be there cheering on my home team hoping they end the season with a bang! (And then I'll be rushing home to watch the last Laker game in anticipation for Sacramento to get a beating!) I love this game.

I've been so excited about this release since I first heard the news, that I haven't even been able to figure out how to write about it! But it's time to just get it out and share, one of my favourite underground poets, Aesop Rock is set to release his first solo effort since his most commerically successful LP, 2007's None Shall Pass. That's not to say Ace Rizzle hasn't been busy for the past five years, he produced Slug and Murs third Felt album, along with working with Moldy Peaches singer Kimya Dawson (known best for dominating the Juno soundtrack), Hail Mary Mallon, the Uncluded, launching 900bats.com, touring and more. But he's finally ready to bring his creativity back to the beginning with Skelethon, which is set to release July 10th on Rhymesayers.
The cameos featured on the album are not your usual Rhymesayers players and include Kimya Dawson, Allyson Baker of Dirty Ghosts, Hanni El Khatib, Nicky Fleming-Yaryan, Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz and Philly-based psych-rock-jazz trio the Grimace Federation. It should also be noted that the album artwork is courtesy of Barcelona-based street artist Aryz. The tracklist is below along with the first episode of Aesop's new viral Skelethon series and your first taste of what to expect from Skelethon.
1. Leisureforce2. ZZZ Top
3. Cycles To Gehenna

Paid Dues creator, Living Legends crew member, half of one of my favourite collaborative projects (FELT), and the face etched on the back of my Zune, Cali emcee Murs is featured in a mini-documentary. The MakerMusic mini-doc directed by G. Shon features the life of the emcee for 24 hours prior to Paid Dues kick-off. Watching this really makes me miss both the West coast and music festivals on the west coast, Paid Dues especially. Watch the vignette below featuring Odd Future, DJ Quik, Living Legends, People Under The Stairs and more.
Want more Murs? He recently released Yumiko: Curse Of The Merch Girl, which is both a 10 song album and a correlating full length graphic novel collaboration with Josh Blaylock, Jose Garcia and Juan Urueta are responsible for the art work. Murs also collaborated with Ski Beatz for the album Love & Rockets Vol. 1: The Transformation which was released last year.

The time has arrived, JD Era is celebrating his (and my mom's) birthday by releasing his much anticipated mixtape, No Handouts. The tape features cameos by Era's mentor and label-maker Raekwon, Shi Wisdom and Mac Miller with production by Toronto's own "artist you should know" Rich Kidd, Lex Luger, Beat Merchant and 9th Wonder.
No Handouts is available to download today; I love when artists share their birthday celebrations with fans, Happy Birthday JD!
"Mr. Get Silly," the southern rapper better known as V.I.C., has managed to sell over 1.7 million tracks by wobbling and getting silly and now he's releasing his latest club banger, from his sophomore album Revenge of the Beast. Aptly titled, "Twerk It" boasts the kind of production that'll get us ladies bouncing our booties and shaking our ass, whether we want to or not.
Stream the track below and visit iTunes to cop you own copy.
This past weekend was big for independent Toronto artists, both The Weeknd and The Airplane Boys performed for their largest crowd to date, at the 2012 Coachella festival. Lucky for those of us that could not attend the 3 day musical (and fashion!) event the entire sets were streamed live. Watch Abel's performance above and check out The Airplane Boys performance below, so proud of my hometown boys!!

Label owner, DJ, music maker, club promoter and supermodel Devon Aoki's brother Steve Aoki has joined forces again with one of my recent obsessions (thanks largely to How to Make it in America), Kid Cudi who previously worked on "Pursuit of Happiness" together and Blink 182's drummer Travis Barker for a dubstep yet melodic party anthem, "Cudi the Kid." The visuals were released last week, which besides the creepy IT-like clown, the video was pretty dope, following around a younger "kid" version of the three artists.
This week Aoki's released a collection of remixes for the track, which you can stream below and if you like what you hear you can cop the 6 remix collection that on iTunes.
Aoki's Wonderland was released January 2012 and features LMFAO, Will.I.AM as Zuper Blahq, Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Lil Jon, Lovefoxxx of CSS (I love CSS!), and more... Also available on iTunes

Kanye West kept to his word and released new music from his G.O.O.D. Music label on Good Friday, "Mercy" features Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz. But much like Drake and his double video release on the religious day the Louis Vuitton Don surprised fans with the release of "Theraflu" featuring DJ Khaled (odd that he was involved in both double-drops), in which Ye eludes to Wiz Khalifa's engagement to his ex Amber Rose Only nigga I got respect for is Wiz and takes a shot at his rumoured new girlfriend Kim Kardashians ex-husband Kris Humphries' career, And I’ll admit, I fell in love with Kim/‘Round the same time she had fell in love wit’ him/Well, that’s cool, baby girl, do ya thing/Lucky I ain’t have Jay drop ‘im from the team.
But the line that has received the most press is Tell PETA my mink is draggin’ on the floor, it took PETA no time to retailiate "What’s draggin’ on the floor is Kanye’s reputation as a man with no empathy for animals or human beings. He’s a great musician but doesn’t seem to have the fashion sense to design anything more than caveman costumes. We keep hoping that one day he’ll find his heart and join evolved style icons—including Russell Simmons, Pink, and Natalie Portman—who have dropped animal skins." PETA’s Senior Vice President Dan Mathews said in a statement to XXLMag.com
To listen to "Theraflu" click the image up top, and listen to the soundcloud stream of "Mercy" courtesy of 2DopeBoyz.
Drake celebrated both his religion and his city in the second video he released for Good Friday, sorry, I mean Passover. The visuals for the T-Minus (Toronto) produced track was directed by X (formerly known as Lil X, also from T-Dot), and features Aubrey getting re-bar mitzvah'd with the support of friends, including his music partner/producer Noah "40" Shebib, Trey Songz, DJ Khaled, Birdman and man that calls Birdman "Daddy," Lil Wayne.
Just another case on why I wanted to convert to Judaism when I was a teen, unfortunately it was too much work for a shiksa like me. Hell yeah, fucking right.
Drake drops the Yoann Lemoine-directed visuals to his albums titled track "Take Care" featuring Rihanna and her new platinum look, which I first spotted on the Grammy's red carpet and was shocked at how much I loved it! But I digress, the video is clean and simple, filled with symbolic imagery and gratuitous caresses.

One of our cities most respected and one of my favourite DJs from Toronto, award winning DJ Wristpect has now taken to the pen (or keyboard) in a column for Notable.ca. His mission? To introduce people to the next group of artists on their come-up, making sure fans have access to what's hot or about to be hot, before you hear it in the club. He's found a perfect forum to bring his music knowledge and insider access to the masses. Check out the article at Notable.ca, and if you haven't heard of them yet, get ready for your introduction to Emily Greene, Rich Kidd and Arion.

To promote his forthcoming album, Whiskey & Gun Powder, Atlanta emcee Jay Qwest drops the J. Barnard-directed visuals for "Offiseer," featuring Boog Brown and Methuzulah (one of Youtube's Top 20 Indie Artists chosen by 50 Cent and Common-- Lil B would be proud his medium has flourished). The KRS-One inspired track was produced by Illastrate, who's worked with Naughty By Nature's Treach and J-Live. Jay Qwest ensures this isn't another track trying to bank of the recent Trayvon Martin tragedy, "It is an unfortunate coincidence how this song relates to the recent shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Florida, as well as so many other circumstances in this country concerning people of color and law enforcement. I think it's tragic that we can't always trust the police to protect us." Whiskey & Gun Powder will be released by Elevated Press, April 24th.

Toronto bred emcee JD Era released "Push it Back" the latest track from his upcoming mixtape No Handouts on Raekwon's IceH2O label, with a little help from the Clipse Pusha T. No Handouts is available on my momma's birthday, April 16th.
Actor/comedian/lyricist Donald Glover has unleashed another hip hop alter-ego as D-Money with the track "Eat Your Vegetables." And I really wish he hadn't. How is it possible that someone can produce an entire album such as Camp, that manages to appeal to my senses on many levels can also create something, so... so... terrible? Now with that said, I had only discovered the track yesterday and the day before was April 1st, and it should be noted that Mr. Glover, aka Childish Gambino, aka D-Money is indeed a comedian and with lyrics like "I’m frugal with time/Every girl’s a dime/When your bank account’s mine" or "Man, I’m hidin’ all these bruises/In a shirt I got from Houston/Got her usin’ the acoustics/In my cruiser’s new Isuzu" or even "Man, I die for my hood / Trayvon" I'm really starting to think that this was D. Glover's April fools joke on us all. And if not, there's still time to blame it on a sick, practical joke.
Want in on the joke? Download the track below,
