The JUNO Awards

This weekend, Sunday April 1st is the Juno Awards are taking place in our nation's capitol, Ottawa. For those who still have no idea what the Juno's are, think "Canadian Grammy's," but unlike the Grammy's there are categories like Francophone Album of the Year, Aboriginal Album of the Year, Roots and Traditional Album of the Year, and Even Music DVD of the Year. Also you can expect the naming of Fuck The Facts who are up for the Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year. You can also expect performances from Canadian legends and 11 Juno Award winners Blue Rodeo, City & Colour, deadmau5 and 8 time Juno Award Winner Feist.

Oh yeah and did I fail to mention that William Shatner is hosting?! He's a rocket. Man.

Live in the City: Gotye (Toronto)

The other day Gotye's hit single "Somebody I Used to Know" was playing on the car stereo as my mother-dearest drove me to the Hamilton GO Station. "They're from here...!" she proclaimed, which I had no idea, and could not believe, but "they" (Gotye and Kimbra) were on Ellen, one of my mother's main sources of information and it's a relatively reliable one. So when I heard there was a performance happening here in TO this weekend Saturday March 31st at the Kool Haus, granted a sold out performance, I started doing some "research" for this post. As is turns out, Gotye aka Wouter "Wally" De Backer is from Bruges, Belgium and the featured songstress on the track Kimbra is from Hamilton.... New Zealand! Oh mother!

Anyway, for those that are attending this show that not only sold out in 3 minutes, it also had to switch to a larger venue, have a fantastic time this weekend. And for the rest of us, have fun bartering with the scalpers!

Macy Gray Covers Kanye West

Macy Gray is gearing up for her comeback, this time with a new album titled Covered is comprised solely of Macy's unique sound over some of her favourites. The tracks include classic 80s, with the Eurythmics "Here Comes the Rain Again," hair metal with Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" and new wave with Radiohead's "Creep"and Arcade Fire. The first release is a blend of Kanye West's "Love Lockdown" from my fave Yeezy album 808 & Heartbreak and Nina Simone's bluesy "Buck." I'm definitely intrigued to hear how Macy infuses her flavour on something new.

Canadian Music Week

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the bands are rocking, it's a beautiful day in my neighbourhood and Canadian Music Week starts today! Now while the main attraction for me had to postpone his performance until the summer, there are still over 800 bands at 60 different venues performing for the next five days... and one wristband could get you entrance to about 97% of them! Don't forget the showcases, conferences and exhibits. Austin had their time last week and now it's Toronto's turn to revel in great music entertainment.

So take your pick, since you can't attend everything or maybe you can swing something amazing, and go listen to your favourite speaker, meet your favourite spokesperson, and watch your favourite bands play live, or just hit up a venue you've always wanted to visit but never had a chance to, you might find a new favourite. And if you're wondering where to start, I believe hustlegrl is hosting a large music showcase tonight.

Childish Gabino & Danny Brown Postponed

This Saturday March 24th Danny Brown was scheduled to open for actor/comedian Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino in Toronto at the Sound Academy. Unfortunately Childish broke his foot while performing in Tampa,Florida and has been forced to reschedule his entire tour promoting his debut album Camp. Fortunately the originally sold out show has been moved to a new larger venue, Echo Beach which has a 4000 person capacity, meaning that those who missed out on tickets the first time around have a chance to catch the show this summer, July 31st!

Tickets are on sale now, so I suggest you visit ticketmaster as soon as possible, and avoid paying scalpers inflated prices!

Yosvani, The Violinist - Killing Me Softly

Last week I was fortunate to join Hennessey Black and 1LOVETO as they presented Yosvani CastaƱeda a.k.a "The Violinist" at the Thompson Hotel, as he fused together the sounds of Lauryn Hill, Tribe Called Quest, Kanye West and more with a wrist flick on his violin. Today everyone can listen to his version of the classic "Killing me Softly" (a song that may have put Ms Hill on the map), produced by Warren Credo and watch the visuals taken place in downtown Toronto.

Live in the City: Odd Future (Toronto)

Last year around this time Tyler, the Creator was chanting his hate about someone very close to me in Austin at SXSW, and this year Tyler along with the rest of the Odd Future gang are gracing Toronto with the OFWGKTA tour. Tomorrow March 15th, Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Domo Genesis, Mike G, Left Brain, Syd Bennett, Matt Martians, Hal Williams, Jasper Dolphin, Taco Bennett and my favourite member of the Los Angeles based crew Frank Ocean will be performing at the Sound Academy promoting their new album OF Tape Vol. 2, dropping next Tuesday, March 20th. I wonder if this year he'll be expressing his hate for me... or maybe in Canada it will be nothing but love?

J. Cole - Nobody's Perfect ft. Missy Elliott

J. Cole has one of my favourite albums of 2011 and possibly 2012 and now he's added some visuals to a track that never gets skipped. "Nobody's Perfect" is directed by Colin Tilley (great name, should be mine) and features Missy Elliott.

The Weeknd Live After Party

The Weeknd is performing at a sold out show at my alumni McMaster University in Hamilton this Friday March 16th. The shows are sold out, so if you have tickets, hold on tight, but for those who aren't students and didn't have a chance to run to campus when the show was announced Abel himself will be making an appearance at the after-party. The Official Weeknd After Party is hosted by award-winning Sir Lancelot with music provided by the highly respected DJ Wristpect (see what I did there?). This all going down at Steel City's very own Hamilton Place.

Tonight Toronto's leading modeling agency, Elmer Olsen is hosting their Fashion Week soiree at Thompson's rooftop that will offer not only some spectacular views within the crowd, but also an amazing view of our city. Hopefully your name is already on the guest list, and I'll see you there!

JD Era - Mount Olympus

After releasing his mixtape Th1rt3en in 2010, Toronto rapper JD Era signed to Raekwon's H20 label and clearly began working immediately. He's released yet another taste of what to expect on his first Ice H20 release, No Handouts, dropping this month. "Mount Olympus" features Canadian Shi Wisdom, and in case you still haven't heard previous releases from No Handouts, links are below.

Waka Flocka Flame with Peta & Trey Songz

Son of Gucci Mane's former Manager, Waka Flocka Flame has joined forces with Peta again after last year's "Ink not Mink" campaign, this time around defending abused talks and cats. Kind of adorable, right? There's something ridiculously sexy and touching about an attractive tatted man standing up for the small and innocent.

Clearly that's who Flocka was referring to in the Drake-assisted track, "Round of Applause" in the second verse, Got racks on top of racks, bust that pussy make that ass clap, clap, clap I aint done wit you baby bring that ass back; and of course Waka wasn't about just let the kitties get all the shine, he made sure the puppies get their moment with the hook from his latest release from his upcoming album sung by Trey Songz, Got bitches by the pair, I’m baller of the year/ And haters everywhere but I don’t really care. Or am I just confusing things?

Flocka's upcoming sophomore album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans and Family is slated to release April/May 2012.

RIP Biggie

Fifteen years ago today notoriously known, loved, revered and hated, Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. It's incredible when you think of how many well-known artists Biggie has influenced and continues to do so for artists on the rise. The New York hip hop scene has him to thank both for his contribution in life and the after-effects of his death.

For those who still continue to question who was behind Biggie's death (most accusations point at two causes, Death Row namely Suge Knight, or the US Government, because they were so concerned with the effect that hip hop music had on the population. Sigh.), Complex Magazine interviewed a retired LAPD detective Greg Kading who had some professional theories of his own. For everyone else, just enjoy the music.
Get ready to die, tell God I say hi...

SXSW Begins Tomorrow, Austin TX

Tomorrow one of the biggest media and entertainment events begins in Austin, Texas. South by Southwest brings together interactive media experts, music and film all under one great big week long festival, filled with conferences, showcases, workshops, viewings, meet-and-greets, concerts, parties and more. The interactive showcase begins tomorrow March 9th until the 13th, which is when the music showcase picks up until the 18th and film runs for almost the entire week, March 9th-17th. Besides hearing people speak about the business and field you may be interested in, the best part of this week are the parties, and it sounds like 2DopeBoyz and TheWellVersed may be hosting one of the wildest ones.

Visit the SXSW website for more information, or just head out to Austin and roam the streets!

1LoveTO Present Done Different: Yosvani The Violinist

Tomorrow, Thursday March 8th, 1LoveTO hosts the 5th installment of their "Done Different" party alongside Hennessy Black and Mombacho Cigars at the Thompson Hotel's main floor Lobby Bar. Not only is the event introducing Cuban-born violinist Yosvani CastaƱeda, but it is also celebrating 1LoveTO's very own Lo Falcioni's birthday. Sounds like a great reason to get dressed up and do something different.

Produced and edited by DJ P-Plus

Yelawolf Postponed, Bow Wow, Dev & Florence Announced: Toronto

So I was originally planning on promoting the upcoming Yelawolf concert that was taking place this Thursday March 8th at the Phoenix Concert Hall, until this announcement was made about the Shady Records signed rapper:
The Yelawolf shows scheduled for this week: Wednesday at London Music Hall & Thursday at The Phoenix in Toronto, have been postponed.

After his performance Friday, March 2nd in Madison, WI, Yelawolf was admitted to a local hospital where he remains under observation for illness.
At the request of his doctor, shows for the next couple of weeks will be postponed to a later date.
And a giant sigh was heard from girls all across Toronto who were waiting with bated breath to see the tattooed performer. I'm not sure what it is about him, but he seems to have a drooling effect on his fans.

Another artist that's been popular with the ladies since he was a little boy, Bow Wow's performance at the Sound Academy, March 17th was just announced, along with Dev's show at the Virgin Mobile Mod Club April 9, and the show I'm most amped about from the list, Florence & the Machine at the Molson Amphitheatre August 2.

No word yet as to when Yelawolf will be slated to return to our city.

Soundset Festival 2012 Lineup

The moment all underground hip hop heads have been waiting for has arrived, the line-up for the fourth annual Soundset festival has been announced! But don't start thinking this festival is limited to backpack rappers, the line-up is not limited to the underground or sounds of Minnesota. The headliners include the usual suspects Atmosphere (obviously), Aesop Rock, P.O.S., Evidence, Grynch, J-Zone with Brother Ali taking on hosting duties, also on the list are Grammy nominated (and secret thug) Lupe Fiasco, Wu-Tang's Ghostface and Raekwon, Kendrick Lamar, and Danny Brown.

It all goes down May 27 at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minneapolis. Tickets go on sale this Saturday, March 10 at 11 a.m. looks like it's time to start planning a trip to Minnesota!

J. Cole - Visionz of Home

J. Cole returned to his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina for the first annual Dreamville Weekend with a surprise visit from the self-proclaimed King of the South, T.I. who announced a collaboration between the two storytelling lions. Until then, Cole released another tracking showing off how Simba has grown, Elite-produced "Visionz of Home."

Spank Rock - Car Song ft. Santigold

I saw the Luis Gispert-directed video for Spank Rock's "Car Song" featuring Santigold last week, from his 2011 album Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar, but for a multitude of reasons I kept it to myself. Well today Santigold (whom I still refer to as Santogold), released the visuals to her track "Disparate Youth" which is presently unavailable to view in my region(!), so I thought maybe it was the karma gods giving me a message.

Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar is available to stream for free and purchase via Spank Rock's website. And Santigold's album Master of My Make-Believe is set to release May 1st.

I can not wait for new Santogold (there I said it)!

Live in the City: Masta Ace (Toronto)

Brooklyn lyricist and recent MF DOOM collaborator, Masta Ace is bringing his narrative to Toronto this Saturday, March 3rd at El Mocambo! As a long time fan I'm pretty excited (and yet still have yet to get tickets?! What is wrong with me and slacking ways as of late, I am not sure?), to revisit an artist from my musical not-too-distant past.

For those who have been slacking too, tickets to see the Juice Crew posse member and Toronto's own Rich Kidd, are available via Ticketmaster.ca, UnionEvents.com, Rotate This, Soundscapes & Play De Record, this is an event not to be missed.
