NBA All-Star Game Performances: Nicki Minaj, Mary J Blige, Pitbull, Chris Brown & Ne-Yo

Last night was a busy night in television for me, both the NBA All-Star Game was airing along side the Oscar's. Needless to say I was switching back and forth through both (the game has been PVR'd of course, in case I missed any of the action!), I did catch the opening performance (and Idris Elba intro *swoon*), along with a the national anthems and part of the half-time show. For those of you who missed any check the videos below.

Why Nicki Minaj was chosen to open the show, I'm unaware, but it was thanks to these performances I was re-introduced to songs that I wasn't even aware were hers! She opened with “Moment 4 Life,” and “Turn Me On,” to introduce the winning West team.

Nicki performed “Starships,” to introduce to East All-Star team and ended her performance with “Super Bass.” Mary J Blige performed the "Star Spangled Banner" while Toronto group that I have never heard of, Neverest performed "Oh! Canada," and I will include them once I find a good quality video of both performance.

Naturally Pitbull opened the Halftime show, along with Chris Brown and Ne-Yo. I can not wait to watch this entire thing throughout the week.

Grammy Eccentrics

The major component that sets the Grammy's apart from the Oscar's is the freedom to take more liberties in expressing your creativity via fashion and the fashion-risk-takers at the Grammy's take full advantage of this opportunity to get their message, whatever that may be, across.

Taking the crazy cake this night was Nicki Minaj, who arrived not only in a red robe, by Versace, with their signature, Medusa's emblazoned across her legs, but also with some pious arm-candy. I am not exactly sure what her message is, unless she's merely trying to indicate that Madonna is back, and just like a prayer, she will take you there.

Speaking of arm candy, nothing says Grammy's like some good ole fashioned firearms paired with a bubblegum pink ballgown. Thank you Russia, for letting us borrow Sasha Gradiva.

Another statement that I'm not exactly clear on, but songwriter Bonnie McKee looks very pleased with her attempts at making it. The Katy Perry collaborator would almost have got my nod of fashion approval if only someone didn't dye Cousin It's hair yellow and glue it to her underarms.

Yeah I want to diss the mullet dress, but I keep being distracted by the monstrosities on Robyn's feet. Robyn sings about telling a guy to call his girlfriend and telling her that he's met someone new, but not to give her the details about all the things different between the two girls, well my advice to this guy is to tell her all about these shoes, that'll cheer her up for days.

A "Grammy Eccentrics" post wouldn't be complete without the queen of the "monsters" herself, Lady Gaga, who decided not to walk the red carpet this event, which you'd assume means the attention-whore wanted to go unnoticed, and yet she showed up wearing a crotch-flap with a cane?!

Grammy Fashion: Red Carpet Winners and Snoozers

With all the Oscar specials taking over my television today before the Oscar Red Carpet presentation begins, I wanted to use this time to show the fashion of the music industry's Oscar-counterpart, the Grammy's which aired earlier this month. There a few carpet-walkers in this list who would almost fit in with the more refined Oscar crowd, however it's mostly due to leaving their fashion creativity in the studio.

Taylor Swift was one of my favourites of the evening, granted she was in her signature sparkly nude gown but this cap-sleeved Zuhair Muard Fall 2011 Couture gown offered a new twist to what we're used to from the country singer.

And the back was just exquisite.

Of course Taylor brought things home and down to earth in her Little House on the Prairie performance dress, just shows how well this country girl cleans and glams up.

I NEVER thought I'd say this, but I am a fan of something that is associated with Jessie J! Her silver Julien MacDonald dress. Granted she did refer to herself as a "personal disco-ball" and it's no secret I am a sucker for disco-fashion, but she wore a perfect option to this occasion.

Another winner was Gwyneth Paltrow looking consistently svelte in a black cut-out Stella McCartney gown. I love the gold waist detailing and am envious of any woman who can wear that sort of cut-in strap.

While Adele isn't as svelte as Gwyneth, she flattered her curves in a three-quarter-length-sleeved Giorgio Armani black sequined gown. She looked sultry and glamorous a perfect combination for her vocal talent.

Adele's performance had a similar feel, however it had a nude liner with an odd neckline that didn't quite fit the rest of the tea-length gown. It was a little too Sears fashion than Hollywood fashion.

Carrie Underwood is normally a hit on the red-carpet, however this boat-neck Gomez-Garcia sequined dress feels a little underwhelming, as if I've seen her wear it before. Plus it's a little too covered-up for such an event.

And that's where Fergie steps in with her bright orange lace Jean Paul Gaultier Couture gown! Do I love the dress? Yes. Is this the right occasion to wear it? Absolutely. Is it perfect? No. I wish she had chosen less crass undergarments. I'm not saying they have to be nude, but black feels too costumey.

Miranda Lambert looks pretty and boring.

And Kelly Rowland isn't too far behind in pale pink Alberta Ferretti gown. I really would have loved to see something more fashion-forward and fun on the "Motivation" singer, something sexier.

But the winner for the Snooze award is Julianne Hough, who has forgotten that she is in early 20s and has an incredible dancers body. Much like her singing career, this needs some refreshing.

Jay Z & Kanye West - N!ggas in Paris (video) & NBA

The video for the track that gets almost every man I know wylin' out in the club, and the 7 time performed concert finale for the Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne tour, "N!ggas in Paris" was released earlier this month, but since I woke up to it with my nephew and it was just used as the opener to the NBA All-Star Competition, it seems like a great time to share it.

This only serves as a reminder of how incredible this show was live! The video gives a hint of how hype the crowd was, but it really is something, you HAD TO BE THERE for, and if you weren't? Wise up next time either performer is in town!

As for the NBA All-Star Shooting Stars competition, the women are killing it! Love that!

Gorillaz - Do Ya Thing ft. Andre 3000 & James Murphy

Converse releases the track from their "3 Artists, 1 Song" campaign promoting their latest limited edition Chuck Taylor Gorillaz Collection, featuring artwork by Gorillaz and co-creator Jamie Hewlett. The track "Do Ya Thing" features Gorillaz, Andre 3000 and James Murphy. As per expected 3-Stacks sounds superb and really steals the show, however Damon Albarn surprisingly sounds good himself, which was a little unexpected after witnessing the horror of his band Blur's Brit Award performance. If that's what they're bringing to the Olympics, I just might skip it... and this is coming from a 20+ year fan, it was that bad! But this track is not, it's electric and I'm compelled to listen to it again... and again....

Head over to the Converse website to get your feet into a pair of those limited edition Gorillaz Chuck Taylor's and download the track below.

The Airplane Boys - Dictate (video)

Beck Motley and Bon Voyage have graced us once again with the visuals from their latest effort, Alignment, which dropped last week. Just as The Airplane Boys first video promoting Alignment, directed by Beau Monde’s Warren Credo, "New Blood" took full advantage of the duo's artistic creativity, with lots of imagery and symbolism, "Dictate" does not disappoint. Watch both videos below and make sure to download Alignment which features production from Toronto natives Illangelo, Arthur McArthur and more.

J. Cole - Grew Up Fast (download)

J. Cole has hit a lot of milestone's within the past 6 months, after being signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation in 2009, Young Simba finally released his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story a gold-selling debut album, in January 2012 his track "Workout" went Platinum and he received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. J. Cole's latest accomplishment? People like him. The North Carolina rapper has accumulated two million followers today on Twitter, and what better way to celebrate the fact that you have fans, then to pay them back. Simba released a new free Canei Finch produced track; "Grew Up Fast" samples David Ruffin’s (Temptations) 1969 record "The Double Cross."

The Grammy Nominated storyteller shows how he's grown in his craft and takes shots at "soft" emcees, It’s only right I brought back the soul/ Ya’ll got way too electro, damn near techno/ Halfway homo, way too metro/ Hennessy XO / Cole flow special / Style like Tribe Called Quest meets Death Row/

Of course I'm not sure how his bossman will feel about him hitting on his wife and mother of his first born, And Miss Cleo's Jamaican/ And Bob Marley is Haitian/ And me and Beyoncé dating, but the track definitely has soul. Young Simba is grown.

Rihanna's Birthday Features Chris Brown

I heard about this remix collaboration between former dramatic lovers Rihanna and Chris Brown last week and I could not believe it was happening, but I've been wating for it ever since. Well on RiRi's 24th birthday, the wait is over, the two have reunited... musically is all they are directly admitting to, for now. Chris Brown is featured over Rihanna's track "Birthday Cake" which up until this moment, ended with the fade out "I wanna fuck you right now..." Subliminal messages from the fiery couple? Perhaps...

Considering Rihanna sings over Chris' track "I love you baby," to which CB responds over her track, "Girl I wanna fuck you right now. Been a long time, I've been missing your body!" I guess it's not all that subliminal afterall.

Watch the videos to hear both features, and you can make up your own mind regarding whether or not these two have reconciled. In the meantime I'll be trolling their perspective Twitter accounts awaiting a new link to one of my favourite Talk that Talk tracks.

Live in the City: Doomtree (Toronto)

Tonight, February 19th, Minneapolis hip hop collective Doomtree is bringing their "No Kings Tour" to Toronto's Sneaky Dee's. The seven emcees performing tonight include two of my favourites from the mid to late millennium, Dessa and P.O.S. I'm may sound like a superfan right now, but I'm pretty excited to revisit the talent of my hip hop "past," it's been such a long time since I've seen a great underground hip hop show, perhaps this performance will help inspire me to dust off the hardrive and pull out some of my other favourites.

Doors open at 8pm and it's a 19+ event.

Happy Birthday The Weeknd

Not on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday/Sunday but on Thursday, make sure you are thirsty/Ohhhh on Thursday, baby get ready ohhh on Thursday/hold it ohh on Thursday, just wait on Thursday/Baby only Thursday
One of Canada's biggest sex-motivating sensations, The Weeknd is celebrating his birthday today. The self-proclaimed "nappy headed, camo wearing, henny sipping, blunt smoking, pill popping, singing ass nigga" has had an incredible year, releasing two of my favourite "albums" of 2011, and possibly of all time, and today he turns 22!

I'm sure 2012 will be a big year for the singer, I know we all have big expectations; and with his latest installment from his mixtape trilogy being as incredible as it is, thus proving he wasn't just a "one-hit" phenom, along with the re-release, of the entire trilogy package re-mastered for our listening enjoyment coming sometime this year, big things are on their way!

For those that have yet to download and listen to Abel's third installment, Echoes of Silence is available on for download at the-weeknd.com. Do yourself a favour and add to your collection, immediately and while I'm not making the suggestion to receive any accolades myself, I'll still accept any "Thank you's" people have to give. Yea, it's that good.

First Look at Blue Ivy Carter (photos)

As I sit in anticipation of the Grammy's and a chance to view all the incredible fashion and musical superstars, it should be noted that another musical sensation was shared with the world this past weekend;
Friday Beyonce and Jay-Z elected to not only share the first viewing of their newborn bundle of joy Blue Ivy Carter with the world themselves, as many celebrities have been doing as of late, but the Carter family did it their own way, for free!

The super-duo created a Tumblr account to showcase their pride and joy, I can't wait to see what this little girl inspires next. Check out the rest of the photos below.

I've been experiencing a lot of live basketball lately, I'm presently counting down the hours until I get to see the Lakers live in the flesh play against the Raptors today at 1pm, on Friday I was privy to witness the Raptors beat the Celtics at the ACC, and on top of that I watched the Lakers beat the Celtics at TD Garden on Thursday night (in the comfort of my own home), so what better time to discuss the new Broadway production, Magic/Bird? The story is about the two basketball legends who started as rivals, dating all the way back to their college careers, when Magic's Michigan State team knocked Bird's Indiana State team out of the running for the 1979 NCAA championship, and finished off as Olympic teammates and ended up being longtime friends. When Magic was drafted to the LA Lakers and Bird to the Boston Celtics, the Lakers had yet to beat the Celtics in the NBA Finals, in their pro careers they met in the championship finals three times, ending in two Laker triumphs.

The show opens April 11 at the Longacre Theater in NYC, and I am thinking about purchasing a ticket for it now, who knows maybe I can be seated next to the two over-sized icons.

Whitney Houston Dies at 48

I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow if I fail, if I succeed at least I did as I believe.
One of the world's most powerful and gifted vocalist has died today. The most awarded female artist of all time, Whitney Houston was found in her Wilshire Boulevard hotel room in LA at 3:30pm and announced dead at 4pm prior to her longtime friend, producer and career-resuscitating Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party. It's unfortunate and incredibly sad demise for such a beautifully talented and troubled musical idol. She was 48.
I hope life treats you kind, and I hope you have all you've dreamed of, and I wish you joy and happiness. But above all this, I wish you love
My thoughts go out to Christina Bobbi and the rest of Whitney's family and friends

Madonna - Give Me All Your Luvin' ft M.I.A. & Nicki Minaj

In anticipation of her somewhat controversial NFL Half-time performance, mostly due to M.I.A.'s extended middle finger, and the lack of controversy from Madge herself, Madonna released the visuals this past Friday for her perfectly poppy "Give Me All Your Lovin'" from her upcoming MDNA album, featuring her NFL co-performers M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj. And in case you missed the ladies NFL half-time show you can watch that below.

MDNA is available March 26th.

Pharoahe Monch - Still Standing ft. Jill Scott (video)

Ironically the existence of Pharoahe Monch featuring Jill Scott "Still Standing" video was just brought to my attention last night, and lo and behold whats the first thing I spot when searching online this morning? The track can be found on Pharoahe's new album W.A.R. (We Are Renegades), featuring the deliciously smooth Idris Elba, Styles P and Phonte, Jean Grae and more. Also, for your listening pleasure you can download "Still Standing" below, because I'm just that thoughtful.

Live in the City: Juicy J (Toronto)

Tonight "Weeds, Pills and P*ssy" rapper, and Academy Award winner, Juicy J will be performing live at the Opera House in Toronto. Expect the Taylor Gang and Three 6 Mafia member to get wyle, crunk, crazy and hopefully he'll perform some of his classics, "Dick Suckin' Hoez" "Gimme Head," "Pimp Talk," "Like a Pimp" and "Get me Some Money." Oh and I assume he should probably pull out the track that won him that prestigious award, "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp." Yes there is a theme for the night, so come dressed to impress and get paid, video hoe gear should be in full effect.

Welcome to the Kobe System

Last night I experienced my first Raptors basketball game since Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady were on the Raptors, I was introduced to something revolutionary after we lost to our former player Tracy McGrady and the Atlanta Hawks... The Kobe System. Needless to say I spent the rest of my evening (and now entire lunch) watching every video that includes the Kobe System hash tag.

Clearly I am obsessed, and yes I am a Laker fan, and it's true I finally admit to be a Kobe fan (I don't know how I denied it for so long!), but these commercials are absolutely HILARIOUS! I am a huge fan of dry humour, being Canadian and all and Kobe nails it! As does the rest of the super-celebrity cast, Kanye West, Richard Branson, Aziz Ansari, Hope Solo, Jerry Rice, Wang Leehom, Serena Williams, and Tony Robbins. The best part of this hilarious ridiculous ad for Kobe's Nike Zoom's is that I actually find it motivating! I want to be a different animal but the same beast, and achieve success at success.

You're welcome.
