Toronto Slut Walk

Sunday afternoon hundreds of women, marched through downtown Toronto from Queen's Park to police headquarters on College, in fishnets, stilettos, mini-skirts and low cut tops, all to prove they were indeed sluts and they have the right to walk around during the day too...

Clearly, I jest, but only because the truth is far too absurd to believe; Constable Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto police officer actually stated to York University's Law School that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” So essentially if we do not want to be raped we shouldn't dress so provocatively! Bringing back the old defence and misogynistic reasoning that if you wear something tight, or revealing, you deserve it, or even worse, were asking for it. And here I thought we were in the 21st century, not the 16th.

The SlutWalk was organized to encourage the police to restructure their training and victim education, with an emphasis on consent and “rape myths,” and to improve public outreach programs. Still no word from the force on what steps they will take to ensure such beliefs are abolished, since blame should never be placed on the victim, ever.

In Constable Sanguinetti's defence, however, at least the summer is approaching, and maxi dresses are still in style for another season, perfect way to cover up those rape-inducing legs.

Future SlutWalks are being planned in Vancouver, Ottawa and Boston.
