Fitness Friday: Just Dance!

Today I recommend following Michelle Obama's initiative and Beyonce's steps to "Move your Body" and just dance! My favourite fitness DVD's have always been those with a heavy dance influence, from ballroom to salsa to hiphop to ballet to country! But there is nothing more fun and enjoyable then joining a group of people who's energy you can feed off of.

Today is the night of the monthly Shuffle party that happens the last Friday of the month at 6 Degrees nightclub in Toronto on Yonge and Eglington and although you can certainly catch me at Flirty Girl Fitness studio early in the evening, I plan on shaking my ass at 6 Degrees all night! Come join me or stage a dance party of your own and put your iPod (or Zune) on shuffle! Everyday I'm shufflin'

Let's Move! Beyoncé - Move Your Body (video)

Beyoncé took part in First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative to reduce childhood obesity and encourage "America's Move to Make a Healthier Generation of Kids." This task is being achieved by ensuring families have access to healthy and affordable food, by providing healthier foods in American schools and of course by encouraging children to become more physically active. Enter Beyoncé and her "flash exercise mob"set to a revised kid-friendlier version of one of my favourite Beyoncé tracks, 2007's "Get me Bodied."

The video for "Move Your Body" was directed by Melina Matsoukas and features choreography from Frank Gatson, who worked with Beyoncé for her "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" video (you know "the best video of all time!"). I'm all for people in general moving more, so I think this is a great idea and I hope it really does encourage more children to be more active.

As a related note: I love B's hair in this video, but I could have done without the "wave the American flag" line, I get it, it's an American initiative but why can't all children benefit? Hmmm....?

Music Monday: Kardinal Offishall - Smash the Club

What an excellent Easter weekend this was! First I received a new track from my beloved reggae-infused Toronto emcee, Kardinal Offishall and hours later I got to hear that same track blaring at City Nightclub, the location of all my ass shaking! And that was just Thursday!

Kardi's new dance/club hit, "Smash the Club" features Pitbull, Lil Jon, with production from Clinton Sparks and le "DJ Pop N*1 à Paris" and Clinton Spark apprentice, DJ Snake. Get ready to shake your own ass and turn the speakers up for Kardi's first single off his upcoming Mr. International LP, download link below.

Beyoncé - Run the World (Girls) [tagless]

Thanks to Mr Vegas I received a copy of Beyoncé's guaranteed club banger (whose title is actually reversed from what I had originally learned) in my email after I posted it last Monday, tagless! And just as I promised, I've uploaded the tagless version for your listening and downloading pleasure.

As a side note this past weekend Beyoncé and her metaphorically gifted husband, Jay-Z, (I'm obsessed with his verse on Sade's "The Moon & the Sky" rmx) celebrated their three year wedding anniversary in Paris. Ironically the same city Mr. Vegas had spent a good deal of time photographing while touring with CunninLynguists. Of course I won't explain all the reasons I deem that as being "ironic," you'll just have to take my word for it. What I will comment on though, is my growing affection for Sean Carter's grown out locks! It looks so good on him!

Going to the Movies: Scream 4

Fifteen years after the original Scream was released, Wes Craven decided to reunite the characters we grew to love in the only horror film, I could actually watch (well at least the one's that survived the first three). I'm such a fan of the original that I could probably recite the entire script verbatim, but the scene that won me over was the opening scene with Drew Barrymore... the scream her mother releases was the most realistic, blood-curdling, spine chilling scream I could ever imagine, that the aspiring actress in me has nothing but respect for that nameless (at least to me) woman. After that, I made sure to catch every installment in the original trilogy, and even owned them on VHS! So it was only natural that I attended a screening of the latest installment after opening weekend.

Scream 4 boasts the tag line, "New Decade. New Rules." and throughout the film the theme, plot and character banter often highlights this, which was probably one of the biggest highlights of the flick. The characters consistently referred to movie conventions and scary movie rules, much like the original, and it often made fun of itself before you had the chance to. Part of the reason I believe I can handle these flicks is thanks to the intelligent writing, there were plenty of jump-in-your-seat moments (or in my case, hands to the face--- to cover my eyes), but it was also quite funny; plenty of laughs and chuckles, mixed with a bit of icky gore.

As for the new cast, I was a fan of Hayden Panettiere's character, Kirby. She rocked the edgy, unconventional hottie role with comedic flair. New-comer Marielle Jaffe, who played conventional hottie Olivia was, hot (see below), as was the Scream franchise original Courtney Cox! She looked incredible, although it was hard not to think about Courtney and her (ex?)-husband David Arquette acting together, as husband and wife--- who ironically we're experiencing marital difficulties after a decade of matrimony.

The biggest downside of this film was Emma Roberts. In short, she sucked. Now I've never been much of a Roberts fan as I am not familiar with her acting but I have been enjoying her fashion choices lately, which is more positivity than I may have ever given her famous aunt (Pretty Woman classic aside), so perhaps I may be considered bias... but whoa was your acting bad! There was just a whole lot of over-acting going on, bordering on campy, although perhaps that was the point-- I just can not decipher why.

Overall, worth the watch, but in the immortal words of Sidney Prescott, "You forgot the one rule of a remake, Don't fuck with the original."

Beyoncé – Girls (Who Run The World)

Spotted over at 2Dopeboyz.com and although I'm not the biggest Beyoncé fan, she's got far too many great danceable tracks to just be ignored. The beat reminds of something I'd love to dance to at one of my Flirty Girl classes, although I'm not quite sure why Bee suddenly breaks out a Jamaican accent, but I'll try my best to ignore it and just focus on shaking my ass... Since let's face it, that's all the song was made for.

Here's your chance to shake along at home, until a tagless version is available:

Charlie Sheen at Muzik (Toronto)

Charlie Sheen now has a one man show thanks to his recent cerebral downward spiral. I find it interesting how one man's mental deterioration can lead to such a worldwide craze and hype, so much so that he has coined a few buzz words, Winning, Tiger Blood, and has been offered to go on tour and just.... talk?!?! It's as if our population is made up of a bunch of rubber-neckers, straining to witness the scene of a car accident. Either Charlie is honestly losing his mind, as his appearance and recent "Torpedo of Truth" suggests or he truly is a Sheenius.

My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option Show opens tonight at Massey Hall with a second viewing tomorrow, April 15th. And if that's not enough of the Warlock to satisfying (yes that is what he refers to himself as), then you can join in the after party at Toronto's Muzik nightclub. You just might see me there, bi-winning naturally, with Charlie on one side and whomever on the other!

Fitness Tuesday: Flirty Girl Fitness

Who needs to restrict Fitness related posts to Friday's alone? Not I. Although, I did want to share this info the day I found out about it, but alas life and laziness got in the way (I'm sure there's something blasphemous about being too lazy to write a fitness related post), but I am passing along the news now! Toronto's ladies only, Flirty Girl Fitness is offering a 1-month membership for $98. Now I know that sounds expensive, but you this means you have unlimited access to all drop in classes, which normally run 14-18$ (depending on what punch card amount you purchased), as well as access to the four-week session classes. Normally you could only get these membership benefits if you purchase a 3 or 6 month membership, so this promotion offers you the chance to see if you're really interested in committing your time and money.

I do not work for Flirty Girl Fitness. I only started attending classes last week thanks to a free week pass I was given, and after experiencing Zumba, Booty Beat, Yoga and Pole Dancing classes, I fell in love and have already devoted more money to the studio than I've ever paid in a 1-year gym membership! Clearly I think this deal is a great idea, but if you want to take advantage of it you only have 2 days left! It expires April 14th.

Music Monday: Keri Hilson - One Night Stand ft Chris Brown (video)

I heard Keri Hilson's third single, "One Night Stand" featuring Chris Brown, off her sophomore album No Boys Allowed, the same time I saw the visuals for it, 3 weeks ago and clearly I was too shocked by all that I had witnessed that I've only recovered now! First off, why is she auto-tuned? Second, what's up with her two-tone hair? Although, I may like it, it's still a little shocking. I do not, however, like my third question: What is up with Chris Brown's platinum locks?!?! It looks horrible! Chris Brown also takes me to my fourth head-scratching moment, when the F*%$ did he get all those tattoos? Are they real (I've now learned they are, but I still find it hard to believe)? What he and Rihanna went through their controversy and both of them go out and get tatted? He took it a bit far.

Also, what is up with Keri being so damn aggressive and sexual lately? That's not how I like you... And why does she suddenly think she's Ciara? I've NEVER liked her, so please stop emulating her, thanks.

I honestly had difficulty listening to the song, thanks to all those jarring visual contemplations, so I can not really tell you what I honestly think of it, but so far it's not on the same level as "Pretty Girl Rock" or "The Way You Love Me."

Veggielicious Toronto!

Today marks the start of Toronto's first Veggielicious event ever, which will run until April 24th. For the next two weeks many of T.O.'s favourite vegetarian restaurants will be featuring prix fixe menus, discounts and specials to encourage vegetarian, vegan and raw food fans to try something new. I myself am none of those things, and yet I am still excited for this vegetarian event, since I do love healthy food and love any chance I get to experience a new favourite.

First stop on my list, however, is an old time favourite, Fresh (on Spadina); they are offering their Ninja Bowl (it's back!), a Chi Spa Drink (ginger, dates, apple, soymilk, banana, cinnamon, chia seeds) and a Ginger Molasses Cupcake with Lemon Frosting all for $15!

After reading through the list of participating restaurants, I was shocked to see that there are some Hamilton, Burlington and St Catherine's locations on the list, even Lick's Homeburgers are joining in the vegetarian fun!

I can't wait to get out there and experience some new restaurants, The Beet, Bunner's Bake Shop, Live Organic Food Bar, Magic Oven, etc and relive some old favourites too. What to eat next?!

Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive: Katrina Bowden

New Jersey born, 30 Rock actress, Katrina Bowden has been voted by US Esquire Online readers to be the "Sexiest Woman Alive." Over 2 million votes were cast to help the 22 year old actress beat out Kim Kardashian, in the online poll.

Much like Katrina, herself, I am surprised she won. Granted, I don't actually watch 30 Rock, but I really had no idea who she was, nor do I think she's rather remarkable. Then again I've never been blown away by last year's winner, Brooklyn Decker either, so perhaps people like me didn't take part in this poll... Let's face it, I'm not exactly their target audience.

Katrina believes she has 30 Rock fans to thank for the "victory," them and the minuscule (occasionally transparent) outfits her character Cerie wears on the hit comedy, what do you think?

Oh speaking of 30 Rock, Tina Fey also announced she is expecting her second child. Congrats all around to the 30 Rock cast!

Toronto Slut Walk

Sunday afternoon hundreds of women, marched through downtown Toronto from Queen's Park to police headquarters on College, in fishnets, stilettos, mini-skirts and low cut tops, all to prove they were indeed sluts and they have the right to walk around during the day too...

Clearly, I jest, but only because the truth is far too absurd to believe; Constable Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto police officer actually stated to York University's Law School that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” So essentially if we do not want to be raped we shouldn't dress so provocatively! Bringing back the old defence and misogynistic reasoning that if you wear something tight, or revealing, you deserve it, or even worse, were asking for it. And here I thought we were in the 21st century, not the 16th.

The SlutWalk was organized to encourage the police to restructure their training and victim education, with an emphasis on consent and “rape myths,” and to improve public outreach programs. Still no word from the force on what steps they will take to ensure such beliefs are abolished, since blame should never be placed on the victim, ever.

In Constable Sanguinetti's defence, however, at least the summer is approaching, and maxi dresses are still in style for another season, perfect way to cover up those rape-inducing legs.

Future SlutWalks are being planned in Vancouver, Ottawa and Boston.

Music Monday: Britney Spears - Till the World Ends (video teaser)

Britney Spears took to Twitter today to release a 30 second video teaser of her newest single off her seventh studio album, Femme Fatale. The video features Ms. Spears leading an underground dance posse, as the world above comes to an apocalyptic end. Not exactly how I'd plan on spending my last moments on Earth, but that's merely because I'd rather go out with a bang, (pun fully intended).

Rumour has it that there will be two versions released of the new video, a director's cut, directed by Ray Kay focusing on a story line of the dance inspiring apocalypse, and a complete choreography version featuring all of Brit's dance moves. The full version will be released this Wednesday, April 6th, but I am not sure which one we'll see first. There are also whispers that Nicki Minaj will be joining Britney on tour this summer.

Fitness Friday: Pole Dancing

Pole Dancing is hard! So hard in fact, it's taken all of my energy just to write this, and I've only done two classes so far! I tried an Intro to Pole Dancing class Thursday night, and left with welts and bruises and some rather sore hands, but I seemed to enjoy it so much that I signed up for another class the following evening. After completing an hour of Pole Dancing I am incredibly sore and can barely lift my arms overhead and have been forced to forgo my Friday weight lifting session. I am even more battered and bruised and feel muscle pain I'm not sure I've ever felt.... and I love every minute of it! I believe I've found my new passion and goal! I've learned that there are actually Pole Dancing competitions and I am going to do everything I can to try and get to a competition level! If you're presently bored with fitness and are looking for a new way to tone and tighten your upper body, I highly recommend giving Pole Dancing a try, you can leave the lucite heels at home!
