When summer comes around, I can't seem to bring myself to read anything too philosophical or deep or heavy, which explains why after I read the first sentence of A Thousand Splendid Suns I put the book down and contemplated what to pick up for reading in the sand. Enter Lauren Conrad's New York Times Bestseller listed first novel, L.A. Candy. It's based on a California girl Jane, and her best friend Scarlett moving to L.A. for school and internships, only to be offered a spot in a reality show, aka it's based on Lauren's life. Naturally she took a few liberties in specifics; instead of interning at Teen Vogue, she's interning with a top events planner, and fashion does not play much of a major role in her life, until she starts getting sent free clothes (cue the envy). I expected little, but was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it was, it was an easy read, perfect for lounging in the sun, and I honestly could not put it down. My only disappointment was the lack of "inside dirt" offered, while there was still conflict and drama, and there was definitely a sense of Lauren telling her side of certain events, it lacked specifics. For the most part L.A. Candy was a depiction of Lauren's take on the rise to fame and a behind the scenes look at her life on The Hills and how it was created...molded. As unfavourable as it may have appeared from some angles (and from her best friend and roommate Scarlett), it still sounds like getting casted on L.A. Candy was a pretty sweet deal- providing you have the ability to remain true to her you are, and not get caught up in the tabloid life.

Last week Christina Aguilera premiered the video for the latest single off her album Bionic, "You Lost Me." The song is one of a few ballads co-written by Australian singer/songwriter Sia, about the emotional turmoil of a relationship lost thanks to infidelity;
And we had magic
And this is tragic
You couldn't keep your hands to yourself
I feel like our world's been infected,
And somehow you left me neglected
We've found our lives been changed
Babe, you lost me
Words that I'm sure will speak to many people, and are not lost on me. The video reminds me of "Beautiful" from her album Stripped, but that may be due to the dingy bedroom scene? I loved the hair colour, and the Lauren Conrad mascara tear-streaks! There was something about the video that reminded me of a old Christina, pre X-Tina days, perhaps it's thanks to editing and her appearing so fresh-faced and youthful, or maybe it's because she's singing a ballad, merely showing off her vocal ability instead of adding all the extra bells and whistles. Speaking of "extras" WTF!? was up with the video special effects? Unnecessary and unfitting. With that said, at least with this video no one will dare compare her to Lady Gaga this time around!

Katy Perry has a new goal, she's already kissed a girl, and now she wants to be a Teenage Dream, and she's starting her campaign with the release of her album artwork for her upcoming album. She's seen laying naked on a cotton candy cloud, similar to her look in the "California Gurls" video, minus the lavender wig and glowing skin. Which it must be noted, serves well as a "Getting Fit" inspiration, although she doesn't appear to be a girl who works out, and was just blessed with the figure she has, Katy has some excellent, enviable curves. I may not be a teenager, but Katy certainly has me dreaming...
Let me know if Katy's worked her way into your dreams, and enjoy the artwork to her new single, "Teenage Dream" (click the song title link to download the track), album available August 24th.

After 6 seasons and Kristin Cavallari's inability to revive one of the most successful reality series on TV after Lauren Conrad's departure, The Hills have hung up their bikinis and given up on their dramatic confrontations. MTV played the lackluster final episode, followed by the After Show/After party, which really did little to inform the viewers of any inside secrets nor shed light on any questions or truths. The only interesting part about the whole night was the series finale precursor, "The Hills: Revealed." That and the fashion worn by both the hosts, Dan & Jessi, and the "cast."
It's only natural that we start with the woman who started it all, and her high school nemesis cum Laguna Beach and The Hills successor, Kristin Cavallari. While I don't love Lauren's green, sequined embellished, long sleeved Mandalay backless mini, she looked beautiful and simply glowed. Clearly, she's in a better place after leaving The Hills, and perhaps she's feeling a little bit of extra satisfaction, since the show quite clearly needed her- which is always nice to know. Or maybe she's merely happy with her life, designing another season of her Lauren Conrad Line for Kohl's, working on the third installment of her New York Times best selling L.A. Candy trilogy... Yeah, that's probably it. Kristin on the other hand in a stunning nude Zuhair Murad, had the better dress, yet somehow Lauren managed to look better. Happiness really does wonders for your skin!
Whitney Port looked summery and colourful in a Matthew Williamson Spring 2010 mini for the series finale party at the Roosevelt Hotel. I love the dress, it's very pre-New York Whitney and perfect for such sunny weather, although I'm surprised she didn't use this opportunity to showcase a little of her own collection, Whitney Eve. This would have been the perfect time, since the majority of viewers of the after-show special are fans and are the most likely consumers.
I thought Audrina's hair and face looked lovely, her dress however, was far too typical Audrina, short, tight and showcasing her figure. We get it! You're body is great! We know! Stop forcing it down our throats. At the same time, with all that body-conscious Audrinaness, this dress is somehow unflattering. Perhaps she should have stopped at just tight, or short, or left the cutouts at home. You know how they say "remove one thing before you walk out the door," Audrina needs to do the opposite, and put one (or four) thing(s) on.
Stacie the Bartender is another Hills beauty with a killer body, and yet she really disappointed me with this silver lamé mini. That never happens! I love silver and lamé, but this choice is so incredibly unflattering. You know what I wish she wore... that tribal print maxi kimono she wore on the boat for Audrina's birthday (Season 6, Episode 9); Actually, I don't want her to wear it, I want her to send it to me.
Also predictable since her extreme weight-loss, Stephanie Pratt wore a strapless Hervé Léger ombré bandage dress with navy YSL platforms and matching blue Prada clutch. I like it, she looks good, but I swear this is all she, Audrina and Heidi (and Kim Kardashian, since we're calling out names) wear! Mix it up! The only thing that saves Steph from being too predictably boring, is her newest (and rather out of place) arm candy. Now that's what I call accessorizing!
Oh Lo, how I love your classically beautiful face, if only you wouldn't age it with horrible hair styles. Her Tadashi Shoji halter dress is simple but intriguing with its cord detailing twisting around the bodice. My favourite part of her look, however, were her shoes:
One of my favourite dresses of the night, was worn by supposed comedienne, Holly Montag. I've often confessed my love of white feathered dresses, so it's really no surprise that this would have stood out to me the moment she got on stage, I just wish she did such a beautiful dress justice with a better shoe choice. I'm not suggesting Holly completely "bride herself" up in a gold, silver or white shoes, but a pop of colour isn't too much to ask. Red? Pink? Electric blue? Coral.. I don't care, just not heavy black!
What better way to end, than with the After Show and MTV’s “The Hills” Live: A Hollywood Ending Finale hosts, Jessi Cruickshank and Dan Levy? I love you. Both. I love that colour on Jessi, nobody can work emerald green like a ginger, and yet there's something about her dress that's reminiscent of a Tinkerbell Halloween costume gone awry. Dan, as I said, I love you, and normally love your style... Not today. I'm sick of seeing your bare ankles, and I hate your jacket. But I love you. FYI.

Thanks to Shakira teaming up with Roberto Cavalli for the 2010 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony the already sizzling temperatures will rise to new heights. The international singer wore a Roberto Cavalli cut-out catsuit topped with a torn skirt in signature Cavalli animal print for her performance of this year's World Cup theme song "Waka, Waka" during the 2010 FIFA World Cup Kick Off Celebration Concert (shown above), which was clearly a hit.
For the closing ceremonies on Sunday July 11 2010, Roberto Cavalli created an show-stopping look (literally) for the Shakira to rock Johannesburg. Which includes a belly-revealing tulle top, that's fully embroidered with multicolour pearls, paired with a silk fringed skirt with floreal motifs and animalier print. The outfit is accessorized with a denim belt, embroidered with African style pearls and leather bracelets with floreal silk applications. I find this trio, Shakira, Cavalli in Africa a perfect combination; all very hot, eclectic, with a great animalistic flair. I can't wait to see this live!

Shake from 2Dopeboyz.com said it best, "Despite her being one of the most batshit crazy people in the world; you can’t deny her ability to grab your soul with her voice and talent." He was referring to Grammy winner, Amy Winehouse of course, who ?uestlove from The Legendary Roots Crew has joined forces along with producer & former Tony! Toni! Toné! (and Lucy Pearl) member, Raphael Saadiq. Can you say supergroup? I cannot wait to hear what this trio will conjure up for my ears, the only setback is Amy's visa limitations. Looks like the US still doesn't want an imported drug abuser on their land, thus the closest Amy's able to get to the States is Jamaica...not exactly the best country for a recovering(?) drug addict, oh the irony. Regardless, ?uest is getting things done with whatever means necessary, via Skype or during a trip out to Europe, so hopefully we'll all get to hear this unnamed supergroup soon!

While my country turns 143, I'll be enjoying a Toronto rooftop BBQ and hot tub party with friends, and hopefully catch The Festival of Fire at Ontario Place, or any random fireworks. Will we go out and dance our burgers off? Who knows! Will I wake up extra early to make it to the gym tomorrow morning before the 2pm BBQ? Who knows! Will I wear my "Made in Canada" tank top and matching boy shorts? Absolutely!
Oh and on a grimer note: I will also be cursing (no, not "nursing" a hangover), I will be cursing the new HST tax. How dare you add tax to haircuts, salon visits and gym memberships. Fuck you McGuinty (and I'll throw Harper in there too), you're a douchebag.
