The American Music Awards: Glitterati Pt. 2

Let us continue our look at all the glitter on the red carpet at The American Music Awards, starting with Carrie Underwood,

Carrie Underwood looked cute and shiny in a gold lamé Theia cocktail dress. I really love how the embellished waist line is mirrored on the shoulder; the shoes are unexpected and somewhat edgy without being out of place or over-the-top; and the hair is cute, probably what Jennifer Lopez should have worn for the 2003 Oscars.

Also in gold was Gretchen Rossi from The Real Housewives of Orange County. Gretchen. Wearing gold. There is an obvious dig here, but I respect my readers intelligence far too much to make it so obvious. With that said a specific Kanye West song is playing in mind... Speaking of songs, supposedly Gretchen has decided to take a stab at the music industry (which may explain why she was in attendance to this awards show?), hopefully her voice will sound better than that Atlanta housewife (who was also in attendance), but that's doubtful.

In the press room Shakira wore a Hervé Léger metal pailette-embellished gun-metal bandage dress; if it weren't for those arm-warmers, I'd probably be more of a fan of this dress, but those paired with the tacky boots (Yes I hate them) she looks like she's wearing a chic Disco Ball costume.

Fergie looked superb walking the red carpet in an Armani Privé Fall 2009 black gown with asymmetrical zipper detailing. She sparkled thanks to the gown's Swarovski crystal embellishment, plus the floor length column and dramatic slit help elongate the petite Pea.

On the opposite end of the flattering sparkle spectrum, is Kelly Clarkson. There is absolutely nothing about this that looks good.

Also unflattering are sparkling shorts as sported by teen pop singer Chantel "Chani" Christie. Also that satin button down is not helping her cause either, at least she can walk away knowing that Carrie Underwood will buy those teeny things off her.

Lauren Sanchez had so much potential to look good in this, if only she had purchased a size larger, longer perhaps. With the thigh-highs (which I've loved for many a year, in fact I remember one particular episode of Beverly Hills 90210, where Steve has his car stolen by two girls, one of which were wearing a short purple dress and a pair of thigh-high stockings and I originally thought she were in boots and thought it looked great. I have had thigh-high envy since) and overly tight, overly short sparkly dress grey-ish tights, she reminds me of an aged Vivian Ward, she could star in Cougar Woman or maybe Pretty Cougar: On the Prowl?

Alicia Keys shimmered in a beautiful cobalt blue, jewel encrusted strapless Giorgio Armani Privé dress. Normally I'd prefer silver metallic or nude shoe with this colour blue, but I love the pairing of her blue Cesare Paciotti shoes. Ms Keys does take the blue styling a bit overboard with her electric blue eyeshadow (although the pink lip was a great choice) and the dark blue clutch. Also, what is on her wrist? It resembles a sweatband. As a side note: I love the girls elated face walking by in the background.

Let's move away from the glitter, with Kayla Ewell from the CW's Vampire Diaries; the dress is cute and I even like the ginormous bow that makes her look like a giant CW present, truthfully the only reason I put this picture up is because of the legs growing out of her hips. I find it hilarious. So now that I've unveiled some of my lame sense of humour, let's step over this and take a peek at Rihanna...

Rihanna's black and white, duchess satin Marchesa Spring 2010 strapless gown with laser cut florals has really grown on me. At first I thought she resembled a napkin holder or even an origami napkin, but now I see it as the true piece of fashion art that it is. It's just unfortunate that her hair is that colour and was styled like that. It's taking away from her dress, she's got a Donald Trump thing going, which nobody wants. Her hair is also taking the attention away from her rather visible lady parts, which are probably on display to prove that although she may have The Trumps hairstyle, the similarities end there.

Speaking of lady parts...

Sofia Vergara looks stunning in absolutely anything.. or nothing for that matter, she is currently starring in one of the two best new shows* of the fall, Modern Family (the other, for those interested is Cougar Town. Hilarious). I'm so pleased that she's not one of those incredibly genetically blessed woman who have to show off every curve with excessive skin bearing, in fact the only skin Sofia's exposing in her nude Emilio Pucci one-shoulder gown, is her other shoulder, and does she look anything less than sexy? No. Impossible. Also, I finally understand how the word "rack" was chosen to describe the female anatomy, you can store books on those **LP's.

(*It should be noted, I originally wrote shoes instead of shows, until my Freudian typo was pointed out)

The American Music Awards

I have always found the AMAs rather boring, so I'm not even sure why I was interested in tuning in this year but apparently I was not alone, this has been the most viewed AMAs since 2002. According to Nielsen estimates Sunday night's show drew in 14.2 million viewers, 2 million more than last year, so I suppose I should be happy my instincts told me to tune in. What pleases me most about the AMAs this year were the much needed dose of fashion! Truthfully a lot of the events that have briefly caught my attention were relatively boring, but thanks to all the metallics and shine, the AMAs were not one of them.

Two of my top faves of the evening were worn by our new crop of teen queens,

From the nude make-up, to the nude dress and the nude Guiseppe Zanotti heels, I am loving Demi Lovato in this pale pink tiered Jenny Packham dress. The jewel embellished neckline offers enough intrigue that any heavy makeup or accessories would be competing, and it prevents the the look from washing her out.

I always confuse Demi with,

Selena Gomez, but as my sis had pointed out, they really don't look that MUCH a like- but to me, they are twins, fraternal twins that is, a la Olsen's. But I digress, I absolutely adored Selena's silver sequined Talbot Runhof cocktail dress, I really am a sucker for disco balls, is that what being born in the 70s does to someone? With that said, is it sad that two of my favourite ensembles of the evening were worn by children born in the 90s??? Oh lord!

Well since she's up there, and someone within my age group, let's give Shakira some attention; I love the colour of her cut-out Versace 2010 ultra mini, but there's something not gelling with me. Perhaps its her lack of colour anywhere else in her styling, or the silver lines enveloping her from every direction, or maybe it's the shoes...

Oh the shoes! I want to love them, the details are great, they are close to perfection... But even this platform-loving girl thinks this is ridiculous. Fetish heels need to stay off the runway.

As do non-costume intended, Mermaid-wear. Kristen Bell's Christian Cota silver lurex bandeax with matching draped skirt is a confusing cross between Splash and I Dream of Jeanie (trying desperately to shake off all that previously adored youth by dropping retro-bombs), if only the two were sewn together, or one piece this probably would have been a winner, but then her unwashed hair wouldn't have matched her "dripping with salt water" coif.

One of these I love, the other I detest. Can you guess which is which? Let's look at the evidence: I appear to love distant cousins of retired disco balls, and Kate Hudson is wearing a daringly low-cut vintage Versace chainmail dress. It has also been noted that I am unable to appreciate sea water rejects (not to dismiss all use of paillettes, they can be stunning), and Nicole Kidman appears to have wrapped herself in strips of fish scales made of lace.....Hmmmm.......

I love So You Think You Can Dance, and although I was not a Chelsea Hightower fan on the show, I'm happy that a career has followed after her SYTCD experience (unlike the ladies of ANTM), I am also happy that she has made more than one successful red-carpet appearance. I also appreciate that her silver metallic mermaid (HUSH! I know, I'm fickle, a hypocrite.. sue me) gown has pockets, and a slit to encourage movement. Let those salsa legs syncopate in freedom!

Speaking of dancers with careers, Edyta Sliwinska looks stunning in her flesh-toned metallic cut-out gown with provocative leg slit. Truthfully, if she didn't have a dancers body, I may be dancing a different jig (see what I did there?), but she does. Confession time: I was originally planning on trashing this dress, every other photo I saw of it did not appeal to me, this one however, seems to have an inexplicable power over me. On a side-totally fish-related note: Does her foot not resemble a flipper or what? That fills me with internal chuckles.

And then there's silver bat wings here, that fills me with internal screams. If Menyone Devaux has taught us anything it's how not to wear the silver metallic trend.

Country Music Association Award Stragglers

I wasn't sure I wanted to continue on the topic of the CMA's, considering the event has now happened over a week ago, and I think my last post on it was sufficient enough; that was until I saw the new Michelle Branch video on CMT and my question as to why she was even at the CMA's, considering we haven't seen her face or heard her name in such a long while, was finally answered! She's now a country singer?

I guess she's done with the emo-pop, what a shame. I suppose that's why she's dressing much brighter and over-accessorizing. In theory, I like a lot of what she's got going on here... just not all at the same time! The bib necklace, with the studded clutch, the purple shoes against the bright teal satin dress (thank you for that combo, however), the shoulder decal, the bangles... AHHHHH, accessory overload!!!!

Speaking of overload... Leann Rimes dons a beautiful white dress, and pairs it with a heavy pair of black shoes and two black eyes.

Like we really needed the close up, you can see her makeup artist getting fired a mile away. I will state that the Canadian in me, appreciates the Raccoons tribute, Ralph and Melissa would be so proud.

Speaking of pride... Drag-Queen Mermaid. All I'm saying.

How fitting that Kenny Alphin goes by the name "Big" (from Big and Rich), since he really knows how to do it Loud (yup, song title pun). Let's thank him for his Mad Hatter message to Love Everybody. I will Kenny. I will. Christiev Corothers looks good considering all the stage props she's wearing, just change that dress colour and ditch the necklace, oh and take off the sheer 1970s curtain.

Randy Travis' wife, Lib Hatcher followed Kenny's costume theme, and showed up to the CMA's as a witch, moonlighting as a "present day" Betty Page impersonator, moonlighting as WWE wrestler. At least she doesn't rely on her husband to pay the bills, good for her.

Let's move onto more pleasant images. There are only two.

Nancy O'Dell has never in her entire career been able to win me over with her fashion choice as much as she has with this dress, although she's come close on a couple of occasions. Normally over she overdoes it, or blows it in the accessory department or is over-tanned. But not today (or last week I should say), the cut is flattering and sexy without being overt, the necklace is simple yet edgy, and her skin is not orange. Hoo-rah!

The 43rd Country Music Association Awards

Since it seems I am now a Country music fan, even if it's only on a part-time basis, I naturally spent this past Wednesday night watching the 43rd CMA Awards. Not that I have much attachment to many of the artists, thus I couldn't care less who wins what, but I was definitely interested to hear who may be performing (Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Sugarland, Lady Antebellum, etc), but being the girl that I am, I was most interested to see who wore what especially since over the past decade the ladies of country have turned over their gaudy, tasseled, sequined getups for more glamorous and fashion-forward gowns. Unfortunately there were very few gowns that I actually loved, but at least there were a couple pretty ones, and a few that made me debate their sanity out loud.

Let's start with Miss Entertainer of the Year herself, Taylor Swift;

Looking like an ice princess in a sequined strapless Reem Acra gown, I'd prefer to see it in a different colour, but I she still looks fabulous. Then again, I'm biased.

Another woman I seem to have bias over is Jennifer Nettles. In this case, however, there is no denying how amazing she looks in her Luisa Beccaria tulle gown. The bodice fits her like a bandage (dress) and I love the detail in the skirt.

I really wish I could allow Faith Hill her spotlight and just show a solo photo, but I find her solo pics rather dull. Her gray strapless Azzaro dress is fine, pretty even, it's a little too...Lauren Conrad, and I believe I'd prefer it on someone of that age set instead Mrs McGraw no matter how youthful she still looks. The best part of this look are her accessories, both the layered necklaces and that handsome thing on her arm, the only things that give this ensemble intrigue.

Kellie Pickler has the cutest personality, bubbly, slightly ditzy, sweet, all true of her age, and yet she doesn't appear to be any of that with her new hue. I'm the first to proclaim a love for gingers, but Kellie loses herself without her blonde hair, and this metallic David Meister gown is only aging her, she should have been wearing something more like...

Patricia Heaton's plunging Pamella Roland maroon mini-dress. Truthfully the two should switch! Patricia here looks great, admittedly (thanks to her many nips and tucks) but this is just too IN YOUR FACE! Both ends need only an inch or two and it would have been far more appropriate for a 50-something year old woman. Flaunt what you got, just don't look...desperate? doing so.

Martina McBride avoids looking desperate in a silver strapless draped Georges Hobeika gown, she also looks like a beautifully adorned pillowcase.

Her performance gown is much better and looks less like something she borrowed from one of her three daughters, plus the colour is superb on her.

I had absolutely no idea who Drake Dixon was when I saw him on the red carpet, until I found his youtube videos. This getup makes him look like the white Gary Coleman! Seriously I'm not denying how adorable this child is, just tell me random facts, like the human head weighs 8 pounds and my heart would melt.. but the adorned jacket is reminiscent of those country artists of yore that I had mentioned in my intro, plus a child in a suit? It merely helps further the theme I've noticed of the evening. Age swap!

For those who may have mistaken American Idol alum Diana DeGarmo for someone older, like CSI Miami's Eva La Rue, you are not alone. I think the dress is kind of great (the neckline could be a just a tad lower), as are the shoes, but she herself does not look like a mere 22. What on earth is going on with everyone on Wednesday night?!?!

Finally someone age appropriate. Thank you Jennnette McCurdy, thank you!
